Before building a new home or extension it is essential to have a “soil report” carried out. This report is called a Site Classification Report in the industry. It should be carried out by a fully qualified and suitably experienced Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer. Southern Geotech has been involved in the Melbourne Geotechnical industry since the late 1980’s and ALL work is carried out by fully qualified Geologists with years of practical experience.
For upper storey additions we carry out what is called a footing probe which involves excavating the existing footing to determine its size and estimate its width. The foundation (material the footing is supported on) is also determined and tested to determine how much additional load it can take. This is known as a Bearing Capacity Test and will allow the Engineer to determine whether the footings will be able to support the new upper storey loads.

Geotechnical Reports
A geologist will visit your site and drill a number of test bores in the places of the proposed new building foundations. A detailed report will then be made and issued to you. All site reports meet the Australian standard 2870 for footings and slabs.
